Video Surplus, Phoenix, AZ. The name implies they take VHS tapes from closed stores but I think it’s only the inventory from one place. They originated from the back of Super Pawn on 46th St. and McDowell but they eventually broke off into their own business. It’s like stepping into a video store from 1985. I’ve only been there about half a dozen times over two years but I’ve spent hours looking at their tapes. Every time I go I find something new, one guy (of 2) tells me he shops for VHS every weekend but he won’t tell me where he goes. They are always looking in some book to find out if a tape is on DVD or not to mark those ones up. I’ve tried to tell them about IMDB and Amazon but they don’t understand and I’m not sure if they know about the Internet. The funniest thing about that place is they also have a back room full of adult tapes and even those are from the 1980s, with big boxes!
